Congratulations! You have recently been appointed a team leader. Most likely you have been tasked with a difficult objective and expected to accomplish it with limited time, scant resources and busy individuals with other priorities.
This is not an uncommon scenario. So how do you rally a group of individuals into a cohesive unit that is focused on the team’s objective?
Effective leaders know how to overcome challenges by doing the seemingly impossible with a well-functioning team of people. Do you think an “All-Star” team will guarantee success? Not always.
Remember the 2004 Olympic basketball team? It was a group of the best NBA players who seemed poised for Olympic greatness. Instead, the team was an abysmal failure. Contrast this with the success of the 1980 Olympic hockey team. The team consisted of a group of mostly college players who were considered the underdogs against the long-winning Soviet Union team. With effective leadership, the U.S. team beat the odds.
