10 Year Vision for Knoxville
It is undeniable that Knoxville is growing rapidly. In 10 years, I envision a culture that is safe, inviting, and inclusive. A city that welcomes different people and businesses to create new enhanced opportunities.
What is Knoxville's Best Kept Secret?
Community and Connectivity. I love walking down the street and greeting my neighbors, celebrating each other’s wins - big and small, and the cross promotion of businesses. This is one of the biggest compliments I hear from out-of-town visitors.
What would you do to strengthen Knoxville?
I would encourage others to get involved with non-profit organizations and be an active volunteer. Go walk a dog at Young Williams. Join up with friends for a trash clean up with Keep Knoxville Beautiful. Offer to sponsor a child at the Boys and Girls Club. There are so many ways to serve.
What is your favorite Knoxville memory?
I have a ton of great Knoxville memories! But perhaps one of my favorite Knoxville memories was Boomsday as a child. Enjoying the boat ride to downtown. The ash raining in the boat during the firework show. And my parents wearing matching t-shirts that read “IF ITS TOO LOUD, YOU’RE TOO OLD.”
What is your favorite book or what book is currently on your nightstand?
Atlas Shrugged: Ayn Rand
What is the best advice you have received from a mentor, and who was that mentor?
Pat Rodgers, President/CEO of Rodgers Builders was a major supporter when I started my own business 10 years ago. As I was resigning, she took me to lunch to understand why I was leaving. She then awarded me all the projects that I was currently working on – becoming my first client. She took the opportunity to help a small woman-owned business and instilled in me the expectation to do the same for others. To me that is true leadership.
What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?
Stay the course and trust yourself. Don’t be scared to be you. Just LEAN IN!
