What is your vision for Knoxville 10 years from now? As a City employee, I’m really looking forward to my LK colleagues’ answers for perspective as the City moves forward. But from my standpoint, the vision would include retaining the City’s wonderful unique culture as known by those who have grown up in this area, while encouraging and managing growth/diversity/etc. Aside from our beautiful location, that foundational culture is what continues to appeal to Knoxvillians, old and new. What is Knoxville's best kept secret? Native Knoxvillians. They provide such a rich heritage and perspective! What would you do to strengthen Knoxville? Listen…REALLY listen, to those who have poured their lives into this area, both old and new. Then use that to inform related decisions. What is your favorite Knoxville memory? Attending elementary school at Rocky Hill in the mid-70s and celebrating May Day with the May Pole dance each year, the animals you could check out from the school library, walking to/from school with a group of neighborhood friends, and then playing outside until dusk/dark with very little concerns. It was a wonderful life! What is your favorite book or what book is currently on your nightstand? All-time favorite book is The Bible; currently on my nightstand: Start-Up City by Gabe Klein (Mayoral assignment 😊) + Built to Last by Jim Collins and Jerry I. Porras. What is the best advice you have received from a mentor, and who was that mentor? I’ve had so many wonderful mentors and advice along my journey, it’s hard to choose. The most recent was from Mike Swift, CFO for the City of Maryville. He reminded me of priority values as follows: “God, family, and after that, everything else…and by the way, don’t ever forget it’s just a job.” What advice would you give to your 16 year old self? Enjoy the simple time you’re living in, it’s about to change quickly as technology evolves!
